As everyone suspected after that crazy twist at the end of The Flash’s second season finale, the show is officially taking on the seminal DC Comics storyline Flashpoint next season.
Grant Gustin confirmed the news via Twitter on Monday, first teasing that he had read the premiere script, but couldn’t reveal the title. Greg Berlanti then responded via twitter giving the OK to divulge it.
At that point, Gustin tweeted “Flashpoint. This is not a drill.”
If you don’t know what FLASHPOINT is… read this: The Flash doing Flashpoint in Season 3?! and then go out and buy Flashpoint. It’s a great read.
What this actually means for the show remains to be seen. The show obviously won’t be introducing characters like Aquaman and Wonder Woman, but could just apply those roles to already existing characters. The show already toyed with the idea that Robert Queen (Jamey Sheridan) was The Arrow on Earth-2 instead of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), which is easily transferred to the Flashpoint storyline (Thomas and Bruce Wayne).
The question remains… How does this effect Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl… especially considering the Four-Way crossover event that has already been announced. Technically all of those story lines could continue without being effected – the heroes move on in this timeline, while Barry has created an entirely new timeline in which his mother never died. Or might Flashpoint takes us into another comic book storyline Crisis of Infinite Earths which has been teased on the show since the pilot…. um, head exploding now. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out!
